Redstone Redux-Day 3

Practically the whole reason for going to Redstone was that we’d be close to Glenwood Springs so we could stop there on the way home for an extended warm dip.  That dip was today, and it was delightful.

Before we could leave for the hot springs, we had to do the morning dishes and campsite teardown.

Soon enough we were out of Redsone and into the pool!

Redstone Redux-Day 2

Today was mostly a hiking day.  We researched a trail a couple of miles from our campground, running along Avalance Creek, and decided we’d give that a try.  It was full of beauty and some interesting surprises.  It also turned out to be quite a climb in elevation as well, which eventually got the better of most of us.

I've seen hummingbirds hundreds and hundreds of times in my life, but before today, I'd never seen a hummingbird nest. We spotted one flying around and saw it land near this well-camoflaged little nest.

As if spotting my first hummingbird nest wasn't amazing enough, it turned out that this nest was populated! Again, I've never seen a baby hummingbird before today.

The final photographic jewel in this series was getting this extreme closup of two hummingbird chicks in their nest. For scale, the nest itself was only about an inch and a half across. What an amazing photo op!

After already experiencing the thrill of seeing my first hummingbird nest in nearly 50 years of life, I caught the sound of another hummingbird on the way down from our hike. I visually followed the bird until it lit on it's nest! Just to top it off, the bird sat stock still as I took picture after picture, eventually maneuvering the camera lens to just inches from the nest. More thrills!!

As the kids rammed around the self-named Paradise Island on Avalanche Creek, Theo was completely unaware of how dirty he was getting. I had to show him this picture on the back of the camera to convince him of the stripes he was wearing.

Redstone Redux-Day 1

We knew we wanted to get in one more camping trip this summer, but weren’t sure about where to go.  We wanted to be near Glenwood Springs so we could stop for a warm dip on our way home.  After scouring the area for good camping, we decided to go back to Redstone, where we camped last summer.  The kids had loved it and though we wanted to try someplace new, we knew this decision would go over well.

With the White River running not so high and boisterous as last year I decided to venture across. Of course the kids wanted to try it, too. I figured I'd help them out and see how far they could get. Here, Theo looks pretty confident as he nears the deeper water.

I wasn't too confident in CC's ability to make it across the river, but she definitely wanted to give it a try. What the heck?

Nathan asked if he could try to cross without holding on to me, and, having learned from CC's success, I thought I'd just monitor him from downstream a bit.

He made it look easy, then undertook the victory dance.

Back from the cool river, we all needed a hearty, warm dinner. Looks like a big plate of noodles is hitting the spot for Theo.

Like Father, Like Son

I got a kick today when Theo came running back to the house, asking for the camera.  I gave it to him and asked what he was going to photograph.  He said, excitedly, “I saw a deer over in the forest!”  A budding nature photographer.

Building Bird Houses

Remember back in June when the kids helped me put together 90 bird house kits, anticipating getting to make their own?  This was the week.  On Monday, at the Fingerprints of God camp, the kids joined dozens of other campers building their houses.  Today we got out the paint and all the kids painted their birdhouses.  What fun this project turned out to be.
